IFAW and the League Against Cruel Sports employs teams of professional hunt monitors whose job is to peacefully observe and record activities of hunts in the field to ascertain whether an offence has been committed and to gather evidence of the circumstances of any offences. IFAW and League monitors never disrupt hunts or interfere in their activities and they abide by a strict code of conduct, which can be viewed below. The hunt monitors are professionally trained in evidence gathering.
If the monitors have evidence of alleged illegal activities they present this to the local police force for further investigation.
Evidence obtained by IFAW and League hunt monitors are currently being used in cases brought by the Crown Prosecution Service and in private prosecutions.
IFAW hunt monitors have been assaulted while carrying out their work. In September 2006 hunt supporter Christopher Marles was found guilty of causing actual bodily harm to Kevin Hill.
